Autumn season cancelled! Sorry
Wednesday 8 Oct 2008We are very sorry to have to announce that there will be *no* Phoenix events this autumn. We had a great season planned for you all, but unfortunately have just received notice that our venue, the Companion's Club, has had to close.
It had also become clear that our small but dedicated team of volunteers were struggling to be able to support the Phoenix venture. So if anybody feels they may be able to help us carry on, we would love to hear from you.
STOP PRESS: Autumn season cancelled
Wednesday 8 Oct 2008We are very sorry to have to announce that there will be *no* Phoenix events this autumn. We had a great season planned for you all, but unfortunately have just received notice that our venue, the Companion's Club, has had to close.
We are working on an alternative strategy, but it may be a while. Please stick with us!
If you loved our summer events, then why not check out GondwanaSound for more and similar fun to keep your spirits up until Phoenix returns...
Also, renowned storyteller Simon Heywood, who regailed us all in July with his energetic telling of Jack the Giant Killer, is back in Sheffield this month together with Nick Hennessey and The Middle Yard. You can catch them at the Library Theatre, Friday 24 October, 2008 at 7.30pm as part of Off the Shelf Literature Festival.
Summer Season over, but Autumn is looming...
Monday 7 Jul 2008Thanks to all who contributed to our two opening events on June 5th and July 3rd - whether you were performing, volunteering or visiting. In particular, warm thanks go to Seize the Day, the Grinders' Misfortune Society, East Handed, Chechelele, Doug Eunson & Sarah Matthews, Outre Manche, Simon Heywood & Shonaleigh, Billy Martin Jnr, Triskele Sword, Clarke Buehling, Chris McMahon, Hekety, Stirrings, the Burngreave Messenger, Forged in Sheffield, Jerry Simon, Nicola Freeman, Babak Kouravand, Gav Tolan, Jo Maher, Steve Fotios, Jemma Gurney, John Brown, the Companion's Club, and all the many others who worked so hard to get the club back in business.
We had a lot of glowing feedback which tells us we're mostly doing the right thing, and we're now looking at the feasibility of continuing with more events in the Autumn.
We'll try and get news of any future gigs up here as soon as possible, along with reviews of our re-opening season.
3 July 2008 - Seize the Day, East Handed, Chechele, and more...
Tuesday 24 Jun 2008Did you miss us last month? Or were you there for the party? Whichever way, next week at the Phoenix Music Club we have yet another spankingly good line up to delight your ears and tickle your rhythm muscles...
For your delectation and delight...
CHECHELELE - a capella world choral extravaganza.
EAST HANDED - with their sublime Balkan song, acrobatic viola and infectious beats
SEIZE THE DAY - Bold, beautiful front line folk -"From hauntingly beautiful ballads, to highly addictive protest anthems... the greenest band in the land." (Green World, UK Green Party Magazine)
June 5th - Grinders' Misfortune Society
Friday 30 May 2008With great regret, we have to announce that Janiveer cannot join us
for the re-opening of the Phoenix Music Club next Thursday. This is
due circumstances outside of their control. We're really sorry not to
be able to include them at this time, but fully intend to book them in
our Autumn season if they are available.
However, we are very pleased to welcome Sheffield's own Grinders' Misfortune Society who have stepped into the breach and will provide an equally lively climax to our opening event.
We're back: Thursday 5th June 2008!
Thursday 29 May 2008Dear Friends,
You may have wondered where we'd gone, you may have feared we'd closed our doors for good... but no!
Phoenix Music Club rises again after a three year break. Back with a vengeance on Thursday 5th June at our new home, the Companions Club, Barnsley Road, Sheffield.
Don't miss out on the fun, as we've got a packed show lined up for you.
New website launched
Thursday 8 May 2008Whoop! Welcome to Phoenix's new website :)
We're now well into preparations for the new Phoenix season, starting at the Companion's Club in Pitsmoor on the 5th June. This website is a whole lot easier to update that the old one, so we hope we'll be able to give you more inside information on the Phoenix Music Club, and keep you better posted about developments.
Please feel free to drop us a line and let us know what you think of the new site.
Phoenix is back in business
Friday 25 Apr 2008Nearly four years after our last event, we're finally looking at the first two gigs of our revived club.
It's been a long hard battle getting the club back up and running. Although our first season in 2003/2004 was a storming success, half our organising team had babies and didn't have time or energy to keep it going.
